In late October we filed preliminary examination (search) applications at the Iraqi Trademark Office in Baghdad for a mark covering three classes. That meant three separate applications, one per class, not one combined filing.
It is tempting to hold back instructions while the final goods list is still being debated. That is not necessary. As we confirmed to the client in writing, we are not obliged to carry every item listed at search stage into the trademark registration applications. Unwanted goods can still be removed, and we exclude them when the registration applications are filed.
Note that our confirmation covered removing goods only. Do not assume goods can be added later, so it pays to be complete at the start.
Before instructing a search for trademark registration in Iraq:
- Count your classes: in our files, each class was filed as its own search application
- Send the full goods list you might need, not a cut-down version
- Mark the goods you are unsure about, so they can be dropped at registration stage
- Do not hold the search back while the final list is being agreed
