The Baghdad e-filing system will reject a goods item if the wording differs from the official list, even when the official wording itself contains spelling mistakes.

Filing

The electronic system at the Iraqi Trademark Office only accepts goods whose descriptions match the official classification exactly, spelling and grammar errors included. Goods written in free text are therefore a problem.

In one file this October, the goods in the instructions could not be found on the official list. We therefore filed the two preliminary search applications covering all goods in their respective classes.

The good news: the search stage is not the final word. At the registration filing stage, any goods from the relevant class can be selected and the rest omitted. That second list is the one you will register.

For trademark registration in Iraq:

  • Ask your Iraqi agent for the official goods list for each class
  • Highlight the goods you want directly on that list and return it with the instructions
  • Do not send free-text specifications for Baghdad filings
  • Review the goods again at registration stage, where you can narrow them

Sending a new filing to Baghdad? We will share the official list for your classes before you instruct.
