In Kurdistan, renewing a mark can mean saying goodbye to its original certificate.

Kurdistan

The Trademark Registrar in the Kurdistan Region follows a practice that matters at renewal: the original registration certificate must be returned upon renewal, and once returned, the Registrar keeps it.

In one batch of Kurdistan certificates found to contain errors this year, all of the marks were due for renewal in 2026. Returning the certificates to have them corrected would have meant handing them over for good, so there was no possibility to rectify them.

The lesson: an error noticed late may not be correctable, and the paper original does not come back.

What we recommend for every Kurdistan trademark certificate:

  • Check it letter by letter the day it arrives: owner name, address, mark, class, dates
  • Raise any error at once; do not wait for the renewal year, when returning the original means the Registrar keeps it
  • Keep high-quality scans of the original
  • Plan renewals knowing the paper original will stay with the Registrar
