Older Baghdad registrations were granted under lettered sub-classes. At renewal the owner selects specific goods, and in October 2026 we repeated one rule to several colleagues: the goods selected for reclassification must strictly correspond to the goods covered by the original registration under the old classification.
If the old mark covered one sub-class, selecting goods as though it covered a whole class can raise concerns with the Trademark Registrar and cause significant delays in examining the application, and the renewal may wait with it.
The opposite case: where a mark is registered under all sub-classes of a class, the owner may select all goods in that class or limit the selection to those relevant to the business.
One more point: we do not choose the goods. We cannot know the owner's actual products or plans, so only the owner can decide.
Before you instruct:
- Check which sub-classes the old registration actually covers
- Choose goods only within those sub-classes
- All sub-classes registered? The whole class is open to you
- Remember that official fees follow the number of goods selected, so choose deliberately
Renewing an older mark in Iraq? Send us the old certificate and we will show which sub-classes it covers.
