Renewing a trademark in Iraq months early did not cost us a single day of protection.

Renewal

In January 2026 we renewed marks at the Iraqi Trademark Office whose renewal due dates fell in April and August 2026. The confirmations were clear: each mark was renewed for an additional ten years, effective from its renewal due date, not from the date the renewal was filed. In both files the renewal followed the filing of a reclassification application.

So in these files there was no reason to hold renewal instructions until the last weeks. Filing early kept the full term and removed the deadline pressure.

A separate file shows how one foreign agent dealt with a POA that was not ready. Their instruction: if local legalisation of the POA is not ready, do not allow the mark to enter the grace period; renew it before the deadline and the POA will be filed late.

Renewal checklist for Iraq:

  • Send renewal instructions months ahead of the due date
  • Raise any reclassification need at the same time, as both renewals above followed one
  • If the legalised POA is delayed, consider instructing the renewal anyway, as that agent did
  • Track the POA separately so it follows promptly
