In one assignment file, we filed an application to change the owner's name, followed by the assignment, with the Iraqi Trademark Registrar on 1 March 2026.
The mark's certificate carried a note linking it to another registration. The Registrar's legal adviser, who reviews documents and assignment applications before the official fee is opened for payment, told us that the mark cannot be assigned without the other. The two trademarks cannot be assigned to two different parties, and one single assignee had to be chosen for both.
The file was still being worked on in early May, more than two months after filing. Linked marks travel together.
Before you instruct an assignment in Iraq:
- Check the certificates for notes linking the mark to other registrations
- Choose one assignee for the whole linked set
- Tell your Iraqi agent about related marks at the start, not after filing
- Expect the legal adviser's review before the official fee is opened
Planning a portfolio transfer or trademark recordal in Iraq? Our Baghdad team can check the linked marks before the deed is signed.
