In one Baghdad file, a short alphanumeric mark was refused at the preliminary examination (search) stage in November 2025 because of its similarity with an earlier mark.
The client wanted to challenge the decision, but only after approving a draft first, and a reconsideration application was drafted in March 2026. Then, in May 2026, the Trademarks Registrar told us the mark was likely to be accepted if the font style was changed. In June the condition became specific: one letter had to be written in lower case instead of upper case, and this could not be altered if the mark was to be filed.
So about six months after the refusal, a small change to the print had opened a practical way forward. The client then had to approve the revised print before we could proceed with the filing.
If a new mark is refused for similarity in Iraq:
- Keep the formal reconsideration option open
- Ask your agent to sound out the Registrar on a change of style or case
- Have the client approve the revised print before the filing proceeds
- Check that the new print still keeps what matters to the brand
