Trademark Classes and Goods in Iraq: Nice 11th Edition

Baghdad applies the Nice Classification, 11th edition, which the Registrar adopted on 19 January 2025 in place of the former Iraqi classification of 42 classes with sub-classes. Kurdistan still uses the old Iraqi classification of 42 classes divided into sub-classes.

Classes and goods in the search

  • In Iraq, separate preliminary search applications must be filed for each class in which trademark protection is sought.
  • A single trademark application may cover multiple classes; it is permissible to file one application including more than one class.
  • The electronic system accepts only goods whose descriptions exactly match the approved classification list.
  • A list of the goods in accordance with the Nice Classification (11th edition) is required. Please highlight the required goods in yellow and send the marked list each time you instruct us to file a search application.

Choosing the goods

  • The Registrar allows the list of goods in the trademark application to be reduced compared with the preliminary examination application, but no additions are allowed.
  • A filed trademark application cannot be amended, even by the Trademarks Office’s own employees, to prevent any manipulation of applications. New goods require a new filing application.

Why the goods matter for the fees

  • The official fees depend on the number of goods selected. An applicant may limit the application to selected goods and services to reduce them.
  • At the filing stage and at the final registration stage there is a maximum number of goods for which official fees are charged; goods beyond that maximum carry no additional official fee.

The Kurdistan Region

  • The Kurdistan Trademark Office continues to apply the old Iraqi sub-classification system, so the applicable fees may vary depending on the relevant sub-classes and the goods or services claimed.
