Change the Arabic spelling of your mark early. In Baghdad, the window closes once the search stage is over.

Filing

As we advised in February 2025, the trademark application at the Iraqi Trademark Office is not subject to modification, while the search application can be amended. That difference between the stages decides whether a change is still possible.

In one 2025 file, the client asked to amend the Arabic transliteration of its mark, and later asked to amend it again. We then found that the mark had already been received by an examiner and accepted. At that stage no further amendments could be made, because the mark had passed the examination phase, so the application was filed as it stood.

What it costs if missed: a mark that goes forward in an Arabic form the client had asked to change.

Before trademark registration in Iraq:

  • Agree the Arabic transliteration with the client's local team before the search is instructed
  • Put any change in writing while the search application can still be amended
  • Treat acceptance at examination as the point of no return
